Well looks like they grabbed Odorizzi instead. I don’t mind the move. He’s a solid middle of the rotation guy and we only gave up a decent prospect for him. He also is under contract for two more years at a very reasonable rate. They still need one more arm in my opinion but it sounds like they are pretty much done making moves unless someone falls into their lap.

Such a Twins move, proving once again they have no intentions on being contenders. They do enough to be rumored on Darvish and Archer, but refuse to pony up what it takes to get it done and fall back on a 3, 4, 5th starter. In a vacuum I’m glad they passed on Darvish/Archer, but this is the same thing they do EVERY year. As I’ve said before if they aren’t serious about winning (which they SHOULD be, they made the playoffs with a young team last year!!!), they won’t get a $ from me again this summer.

I’m glad they didn’t make a ‘big’ move this year. Nobody really was out there to get excited about. The biggest name of the SP’s was completely annihilated in his two WS starts last year. Our ace from last year will be out until May, plus we don’t know what’s up with Sano. I’m ok with the big adds to the bullpen and a wait and see approach on the team. If we can hold it together and get Santana back, Sano is ok to go, and we are in contention near the deadline, THEN we can make a big move. If 2 or more of those things go south, we are better off waiting until next offseason.

Odorizzi is solid. You can’t knock the Twins for that move. I agree this isn’t the “big signing” they promised, but it’s a much needed piece to fill another spot in the rotation.

I don’t think we are going to see much of Sano this season….. coffee

They kind of made the playoffs last year.

The problem with this is that the Pohlads haven’t shown the willingness to make that kind of a big-money move even under favorable circumstances.

I don’t disagree with your comment about none of the SP’s really being good enough to justify the price tag, or with the idea that the twins aren’t really in a great position to make that kind of move given their issues.

But like @bigwerm, I won’t be holding my breath waiting for the Twins to prove me wrong.

If the Wilf’s or Glen Taylor was the Twins owner/s we would have Yu Darvish on this team. Just saying.

He is still not what we needed. Archer or proven ace is what is needed. We made a one game playoff now we need to build off that and sign a pitcher . Still make the trade for Archer.

I like the signing as it is good enough to compete….until October that is. The teams that are serious get the Verlanders of the world…..we get the Nolascos….yay.

Odorizzi was an ok move no doubt. I just don’t know how you cheer for a guy with that name!! hah hah
It was tough when we had Grant Ballfour (balfor).

The exciting part of this club is the offense is back. We now have legitimate big league hitters. Dozier, Sano, Mauer came back to life last year, and mark my words, and I’ve been saying this for 3 years now, Rosario is a stud. Will bat #3 soon. Even our SS was at times last year our best hitter.

The bullpen got better, the starters did not, and if Santana doesn’t hustle back in good shape, which is not his MO, we could be in trouble. Hughes to the rescue? Ugh!

as others have mentioned I don’t think there were any splashy FA signings I would have liked to have seen other than the Japanese babe ruth kid. There are still some quality pitchers out there like Lynn, Cobb or Arrieta. Now if we sign one of those guys and Santana comes back healthy and our young pitchers continue to shine plus our improved bullpen!! We could be in for a long ride. But that is a lot of IF’s

Completely agree. As good as Darvish was during the season, he falls apart like every other Twins starter in the playoffs. Now, if they somehow get Lance Lynn then we start to have the makings of a pretty nice rotation. He’s the guy I want them to go after. He’s affordable, even in Twins World.

Don’t want anything to do with Arrieta…..

Apparently just to reaffirm that NOTHING has changed with the Twins, they snatch Anibel Sanchez off the scrap heap. If settling for Odirizzi and trying to resurrect Sanchez’ career aren’t signs of a commitment to winning, I don’t know what is! rotflol

Werm, the Twins will miss you desperately. In fact it wouldn’t surprise me if they covered your seat and saved it until you wanna come back.

I’m still waiting for your list of free agents you would sign and for how long and how much. Your complaint is they won’t spend money, I’d like to know who they would sign that would make a difference.

We have already hashed over that they aren’t ready to win the American League, the everyday line up is pretty good, they improved the bullpen, so what starter will they sign that puts them over the top?

I’m sure they do, along with the million+ other fans that have chosen not to support these terrible owners the last few years. They said they needed the stadium to compete, but have done NOTHING to try and compete since the tax payers of Hennepin county built it for them. As soon as they openly admitted that their business model was built to stuff the Pohlad’s pockets (only spending 65% of revenue on on-the-field product, while the Pohlads collect huge salaries + surplus operating revenue) over providing a quality product I’ve been done with them and will continue to recommend everyone else do the same! If you want to post a link to Free Agents available by year, I’d be happy to point out where we missed the boat. But our payroll this year is approx. $109M ranking 22nd in MLB, about half of the Red Sox Payroll, and even the #16, 17, and 18 highest payrolls are about 10% higher (or one stud pitcher).

Since you know the numbers what was the team payroll prior to the new stadium?

$67 million, or $4 million more than it was in 2013 in the new stadium when they were “competing”.

I’m not trying to defend the Twins payroll here because it pisses me off like everyone else. But to compare the Twins and Red Sox is laughable. Comparing the Twins to any major market team is laughable actually. What people don’t understand it the HUGE difference in revenue these teams have over the Twins because of their TV deals. The Twins’ is next to nothing compared with these major market teams. Again, not defending, just informing.

Nobody has to like the Twins, I’m not going to waste my time battling someone who has signed off on them. Doesn’t matter to me. I still like the Twins, and more importantly love baseball.

Thanks for posting the payroll table. Seems they lost 400,000 in attendence ( due to losing) but increased payroll $35 million. Also noticed they spent $112 million one year, don’t remember the parade that year.

Todays baseball isn’t what you spend but when you spend it. When their window is open if they don’t spend i’ll be right there with ya complaining. But they aren’t there yet.

    Stay tuned. grin

I agree with you there as well as where it goes, which is why I’m not too upset they passed on Darvish and Archer.

I won’t hold my breath wink but they didn’t spend in the mid-2000’s (instead let Hunter and Santana walk) or 2009/2010 when their window was open.

They traded Santana if I recall. They did get a couple guys back on that deal. Hunter………..not sure he would have stayed. He knew the Twins weren’t ready to win and he grabbed the money.

Anyway, it’s a moot point. These are Carls kids but aren’t nearly as tight as he was. But we must remember they are bankers, born and raised. They toss nickles like manhole covers. grin

When the Twins try and go for someone decent they do the low ball offer, and then say we tried our hardest to get them. So the fans think they really did try. If you didn’t want Darvish I understand but they did the exact same thing with Hunter. The only player the Pohlads have ever went big on is Mauer which they had to if they didn’t want an uproar. The Mauer signing was good i am not ripping it. Time will tell next year when we are very close to competing for a World Series and need a Ace pitcher if the Pohlads will open up their pocket books or if they will be cheap like usual.

Not really we made the playoffs last year so this year with a better bullpen that we should have and another average starting pitcher we should be in playoff contention so next year should be competing for it all.

If their offense stays the same, the pitching “should” be improved, especially the bullpen. They won’t win the Central but I think they can get in the Wild Card game again. Even though they don’t have a starter that can win it for them the bullpen should be able to hold them in it. I think they win 85-90 games again this year. Looking forward to it.

First Spring Training “game” tomorrow evening on FSN+ against the Gophers.

Twins just released a solid player from their 40 man roster yesterday. Hoping today brings a Cobb or Lynn signing…..
