I have a couple year old LG led or LCD 50″ tv. I was watching the news this morning and after about a half hour the screen went black, sound is normal, channel changes fine. I am thinking this is a BAD thing to have happen. Anyone care to enlighten me with there diagnosis?

Yep, wouldn’t want to be in your shoes. I think those things are mostly disposable these days. I don’t know anybody who fixes them. frown

Try a different input, like put a movie in or something. If that is a black screen also then it could be that the video card went out. Do you have a warranty? If not find a TV repair shop and give them a call. Sometimes it’s an easy $50 fix other times it’s a new TV fix.

Another question for you – was it a black Friday special?

No, not a black Friday purchase. I figured as much on replacement rather than fixing. Just thought I’d ask here first

Could be your LED driver circuit board. If it is an LED TV the back light is illuminated with LED’s. You should be able to see if it is the back light not functioning by taking a flashlight and shining it on the screen the next time the picture goes black. If you can faintly see the picture still the back light is not lighting up. Had this happen to my Vizio after about 3 years. Look on ShopJimmy.com, they have a lot of parts/videos to help diagnose what part is bad. If your relatively handy you just have to remove the back panel on the tv and determine what part it is and look up the part number on shop jimmy and hopefully they have a replacement. Cost me about $50 for the new part when I fixed mine. I would search LG LED Driver on google and see what comes up. Good Luck!

Thanks for the tip. My wife found the flashlight trick on the web. We will try that and see if that is the problem, and if it is, I will look on that website and see if a part can be found.

My buddy picks up broken TVs off of CL and fixes or parts them out. If you can figure out what’s wrong and the part you need, look on ebay for parts. A lot of them are easy to replace.

If you have seperate speakers from the TV the TV input source could have gotten switched somehow. Make sure the input source is set right.

I know this sounds weird but I have had the same thing happen before and all I had to do was unplug from power for 15 minutes or so. Plugged it back in and it worked. Have had the voice go out and have just picture and did the same thing and it came back. Makes no sense to me but an easy thing to try.

Used my son’s tv for a year or so while he was between houses. It started to do the same. We unplugged it and plugged it back in and it worked every time to fix the problem. I have no idea why this fixed it, but it did.

I ordered the part through best buy, shopjimmy.com was out of stock and didn’t know if they would have more next week or next year. It was $40 for the part delivered to my door. We will try a $40 fix first and see if that’s it before buying a new one, its only 3 years old.
