What would one call this? That there is a bearded Henley Mulvaney.
Most recently known as the Bud Light spokesperson…..
Last year my son wanted to go and had him shoot a few times. He was not ready to pull the trigger and was a bit gun shy. He was in the blind with my dad and uncle and loved going out. Has been in the deer stand with me and killed a few deer. I was really nervous about him being gun shy and my dad said he will tell you when he is ready. This year took him out with a 20 gauge and bird shot and no hesitation and he is ready to hopefully kill a turkey. We are starting a ” turkey camp” much like deer camp. Last year we were 8/9.

Here is one thing I will tell you. If he shot that 20 gauge bird shot load have him practice on a turkey target with that and NOT a turkey load. You can shoot the turkey load to ensure it patterns fine. But the turkey load will kick and that can turn him off. Then use a real turkey load when he is hunting and the excitement of everything if he gets to shoot he wont even notice.
Hey bearcat, what broadheads do you use for turkeys? Now that my son is 18 he said if he can’t get his bird during his allowed gun season he may use his bow.
Stanley, I wanted to copy and paste this for you and your son. I just don’t want you guys to do something out of confusion. BECAUSE, he is 18 he can not hunt with his bow outside of the firearms season he picks.
Good luck this season.
Licenses
• Spring wild turkey licenses may be purchased over the counter starting March 1.
• All hunters will be asked which permit area they hunt most (to provide information on expected harvest
pressure), but this does not restrict the license holder to that unit.
• Firearms turkey hunters, age 18 and over are restricted to the time-period selected at time of purchase.
• Hunters who purchase a firearms license may also use crossbows or vertical bows, but may only hunt
during their selected time-period or the final time-period (F – May 21-31).
• Youth hunters (17 and younger) may hunt statewide for the entire season (April 16-May 31) with
firearms or archery equipment.
• Archery-only license holders may use vertical bows or crossbows and may hunt statewide for the entire
season (April 16-May 31) but may not use firearms to take a turkey.
• Hunters cannot purchase both a firearms and archery-only license.
• Firearms hunters who do not tag a turkey in their selected time-period may also hunt the final hunt
time-period (F – May 21-31).
• There is no lottery for the fall turkey season. Licenses may be purchased after August 1.

This is what I did with my 8 year old barely 50lb daughter. I know if I gave her a turkey load for practice it would have been game over. When she shot her turkey the only thing she said was it was loud.
I only shotgun hunt so I select a season, usually B or C. If you want a season all to yourself, select the one that coincides with fishing opener. I did that one once and everyone was on the lake instead of turkey hunting.
This what I do, it’s fantastic having essentially 3 straights weeks to hunt with minimal pressure. Also avoids the zoo on the water. Makes for a long wait waiting til 2nd week of may though.
