I have to admit that turkey hunting has never toped my list in the spring time. Yes, Joel Nelson I hate to tell you this… It turns out I have a healthy population of turkeys up here in the big town of Grasston. The best thing would be that they are really not hunted at all! This year I had a picked corn field that added sweetness to the pot! My son Quinn has shown a huge interest in shooting a turkey this year so we set out to make this happen. Our time was limited to get the job done so he had to do some ground work himself. I sent him out the two weekends ago to attempt to get a turkey close to him all by himself. I didn’t let him carry a gun it was more of a self-learn situation to show him how hard it can be. He had decent success but failed at getting one that he thought was close enough to shoot. I told him we would work on it.
Fast forward one weekend and it was Saturday morning and he had been watching all week and I had been listening in the mornings. We knew where they were roosting and we picked a spot to sit. We heard them fly down and head the opposite direction…. Dang birds. We waited it out because I knew they would end up in our location. Sure enough they worked their way back and were heading straight at us. Unfortunately they were just out of range. It was a great way for me to teach and learn why we thought they didn’t come in.
That evening we had the path that they were taking marked to a “T” and decided to hunt it. We got out there early and waited for the magic hour. They showed up a little late but the big boys were there and tailing up at the end of the group. They started to veer off toward the field again but I gave it a few clucks and the Toms were on their way! There were three toms and they all looked the same size and beard to me. They were within 5 yards of the decoys and I told they boy to pick one kill it! It took a few shots but he got the job done! I was so proud of him! End result was a 25lb, 1” spur and 9” beard. Enjoy the pics!
