Turkey Cover Shot – Minnesota Sporting Journal

I got a call from the Editor of the Minnesota Sporting Journal looking for a strutting turkey photo for a cover shot. I told him I didn’t but asked him for a couple hours to try and capture one and I’d get back to him later in the evening.

I snuck out to a local turkey brothel threw in my mouth call, grabbed my camera and connected with a turkey after my series of yelps. I quickly went into the prone position and within seconds I had this nice Tom all over me looking for a lover or a fight. He put on quite the show allowing me some great photo opportunities. Things never go that well for me! Especially after the whole South Dakota ordeal, it was a very cool honor.

I sent him the proofs and he loved them! Proud to say my photo will end up on the spring issue of the Minnesota Sporting Journal!

Wowzers, that’s sweet. Great shots like that almost look more real than in life. If only I had a crisp zoom lens built into my eyeball!

Amazing shot. What type of camera do you use? Having three boys I have really thought about film/photo possibilitys for their hunts. I get much more satisfaction watching them pull the trigger lately.

Thanks everybody, I really appreciate the kind words! This shot was with a Canon 5D Mark II. Nowadays you can buy a good but inexpensive still camera that will shoot awesome photos and shoot HD video. I would spend my money on a good lens however. That’s a whole new can of worms. The Canon T3i is around 500 bucks, and is a great camera for the money. It has a 18mp sensor and shoots full 1080 hd video.

    Very cool Ben congrats!

Very cool Magazine, our secretary at work has a son that works for Minnesota Sporting Journal and I think he may be the Editor. She was asking me a while back if I knew anyone who would be interested in submitting articles. I told her I would check with Bluffland Whitetails to see if any of there newsletter articles could be used.

Must be Bret Amundson? We are very good friends, he’s a great guy and has done an excellent job taking over from the old management.
