Not seeing many Turkeys

Was up in Central Minnesota ( Staples to Detroit Lakes area ) over the weekend doing some ice fishing. Put a ton of miles on driving to and from 3 different lakes. Saw a TON of deer each morning and evening but not 1 turkey. There is still a small amout of snow cover in most fields. With Temps in the upper 50’s and even 1 70 in the forecast the snow should be gone soon. Going to be back up in the area next weekend to do a little last minute ice fishing and start scouting for Turkey hunting. Hopefully with the warmer weather and clear fields they start showing up.

I wouldn’t fret too much, birds are in great big breeding flocks right now. You’ll see some of those toms/hens disperse more as snow melts and food sources become more varied and readily available. I’ll go quite a few days without seeing birds in my area, then see piles of them all at once.

That was kind of what I was thought as well. I was a little worried because there are lots of reports of lots of dead turkeys being found not to far to the NE of the area I hunt. With how nice of weather we had last weekend I kind of thought I would at least see a few for the # of miles we drove in the area while fishing. Going to be taking the 11 year old daughter hunting for here 1st time this year. There were a ton of birds in the area I hunt last season so I had hoped it would be a great year to get her out. I should have a little better idea of the bird #’s next weekend with all the warm weather on the way this week and with having a little more time to go out scouting.

Seeing turkeys pretty regular at the farm the last 2 weekends. I have trial cams out and getting them on cam every day. One group of 5 longbeards, a group of 5-6 jakes and a group of 8-10 hens.
