I’m looking for a solid performing 20 gauge round for my daughter to shoot this spring. We will go pattern the gun of course, but I’d like some suggestions for starting points.

    Kooty,

IMO there is no better round than Hevi-Shot for Turkey’s. My nephew shot his 1st bird last year with a 20 guage and folded the bird at 25 yrds no problem. It was a 25lb bird with 10 inch beard. Also think about getting a extended double x full turkey choke as well if your gun will accept screw in chokes.

I love the Hevi Shot for my gun. Was thinking I’d probably start their also. I haven’t even opened the gun case Grandpa sent along last trip to see if the gun has choke tubes. Likely not, it’s a pretty cheapo brand if I recall. Sounds like some good homework for tonight.

I can’t wait to get her out on the sled and start shooting.

I have had great luck with the Winchester supreme turkey loads. Black box, black shells. We call them black death.

Your daughter is going to have soooo much fun this spring!!!

I just ordered this blind from Cabelas. It will be awesome to take the kids in. I truly think it’s a 3 man blind. Obviously we won’t be moving it much, but the reality is it’s not like I can move much with a kid on her first hunt. For the record, I think dad may be slightly more excited than here….

SWEET!!! It is almost a must to have a blind with kids along, they get impatient leaning on a tree for hours. This will be very nice for hiding movement that we know all kids will make.

If you don’t mind I’d like to hear a review on the blind when you get it. I’m in the market for a new one too and sometimes both daughters and myself are all sharing the blind and it tends to be a little crowded.

Federal Heavyweight #7’s or Hevi 13’s #6 both are pretty devastating with the right choke tubes.

If this weather ever straightens out, I’ll get some time on the sled for Jocelyn. I’ll let you guys know our results.

Your going to have a heck of a time finding any of the suggested shells in 2 3/4″. Federal does have a low recoil HW out this year in 12 but truthfully I wouldnt worry about the shell. You pattern it and let them practice with light trap loads. Neither of my kids noticed the extra recoil of the 3″ mags when they have harvested turkeys.

I’ll be patterning the 3″ Hevi Mag Blends in both low-recoil and standard, but like Chris said, I’m more concerned with how the gun fits and taking good aim than I am with recoil. We’ll see how it goes and will report back!
