Cool lookin’ black cat Brian….or should I say Dean
Those self portraits are pretty cool there Bret!
I swear the middle one looks like Blue! Same color head!
Here are the two we just did with the kids last night
I think they turned out pretty cool. The spider took a little time but turned out well.
Carving ours tonight but those are cool guys
Did anyone check out “I’ts the Great Pumkin Charlie Brown” last night? Sitting with my boys and watching this timeless classic really took me back, and you know, my two boys laughed just as hard with Charlie Brown as they do with all this other crap they call family entertainmnent.
The squirrels took care of my carving for me Seriouly, they ate half of an entire pumpkin and started after another one! If they weren’t sitting on the front steps, the pellets would be flying!
Yep cool pumpkins Eric.
Alvin,
Them pumpkins got sick because they are not drinking Old Style.
Yo Jami,
If you look at the second picture in my post you will notice some of the pumpkin is not carved all the way through, just thinned out enough that the light inside can penetrate making for some cool effects.
You can also purchase stencils now days with all kinds of cool designs.

Jeff Harcey’s sister Darla did the painting!
Those are really awesome pumpkins. Did you stencil them? Or free hand? Those are really cool!! We are carving ours tonight.

Those are awesome Eric! How the heck did you do that?
Jami
All we did was tape a picture over it and you take a pen and poke out the outline then cut out the pieces. One these 2 everything was cut all the way out. I havent tried cutting only part way May have to try that on the next ones

Brett,
What do you use as a carving tool?
Mike
The cheap 5 dollar set at Wal Mart which includes 2 small like saws, a plastic shaper thingamabob, and a drill, the rest of the stuff in the package I never have used. A spoon, utility knife and a small filet knife are used as well.
I have not used any of the stencils which you can buy but instead draw out a plan on a piece of paper then take it from there.
My kids are all grown up to the point they don’t have time to play with the orange skins but I still like toying around…..besides, can’t have home made pumpkin seeds without carvin’ a pumpkin

Holloween Rocks….it bites when limited time gets in the way of fun
As for the pumpkin seeds, the easiest way I have found to make them is to fry them.
Half a stick of butter in a frying pan on medium heat, add the seeds and sprinkle Lawrys seasoning. Stir now and then until golden brown.
You can also season and bake in the oven with the seeds spread out on a cookie sheet.
What a crazy week it has been! Tuesday was an AMAZING morning and I was lucky enough to bring a bird into range for my buddy Dan’s 11 year old son Drew. Little did I know 24 hours later on the eve of our season to start we would wake up to a foot of snow opening morning of the 4th season! Needless to say the first 2 days of our season we spent at work rather than battle this wet heavy crap that piled up on us. Dan was also a turkey virgin and I said if he wanted we could just look at other options for a later season. An I think his exact words that night is “screw it lets make memories of it and play in the snow.” Little did I know he was right on the nuts on it.
Saturday I struggled with birds sitting in trees mid morning not wanting to walk in the snow an the others on the ground were silent or back in groups. Saw 10 different toms Saturday passing on 1 jake close but never heard a single gobble from sunrise to sunset. Sunday I decided we would set up where I noticed birds moving to a field daily to feed/harass hens. This decision proved to be a GREAT one. While setting the decoy set out the south ridge lit up with gobbles over and over for 5 minutes I knew it might be a wild morning with most of the snow now melted down so they can easily get around. 1 bird in particular I had going hot and heavy sailed onto the ridge top very early and went straight into strut 300 yds on top the CRP hill gobbling over and over. A simple set of putts with a long purr had him on a dead sprint toward the fanned out jake decoy/hen set and put him from 300 yds to 50 in 3 seconds and back in full strut walking straight in still gobbling over and over until we called it at 35 yds and he FLOORED his first bird of his life a 21 lb. 10 1/2 “ beard and 1” spurs.
As we were high fiving and going over how cool that was with him gobbling so much the same sound came from the same hill. Another bird was up there going crazy! So I said what the heck and threw an aggressive round of raspy loud calls out my mouth and here he come on a sprint! I told Dan I think it is a jake I might hold off. Well having him come in like he did just got my finger a little itchy and I called the shot and folded him like a ton of bricks! It was for sure a memorable day for us seeing him kill his first bird, my first double called in back to back, and first snow hunt I have ever seen birds harvested! The worst part was after both birds were loaded in the truck we watch another nice tom come running across the hill on the same path we were just sitting. Oh well it was a hunt we both will talk about for years. Looks like it is time for me to get back to the river now!
Beauty pics, even though I know you are in MN, it reminds me of my days in NE IA… And the turkeys really stick out with the snow and limestone bluff behind. Great shots!!!
