Picked my 14 yr old nephew Hunter up on Friday after school in Stillwater to go Turkey hunting for the 1st time. The trek back up to St. Cloud sucked because of traffic. (2.5 hrs later ) I was reminded why I couldn’t live in the cities.
Went straight to scouting and located some birds and tucked them in. Woke up early and parked the truck to listen for gobbles. We weren’t out of the truck for 5 mins before we heard our 1st one. Too our surprise there were more Toms gobbling than we saw the night before. So, we set up the blind and I put the hen decoy on a corn stalk. I hop into the blind and my nephew says; “hey, is that a turkey right there?” I look over to the left and see 8-10 headed our way. We were only in the blind for around 15 mins and he ended up shooting his 1st Thunder Chicken. Wt. 24 lbs, Beard 11″, & Spurs 1.25″. Hunter is one happy kid and I’m one happy Uncle.
