Had a great morning in the woods…quick to be exact. Over the weekend we had some close encounters that just didn’t finish the right way but we get on thumping our way through it. Being his first year turkey hunting we were hoping to at least give him some encounters to get his blood flowing, and it finished in the perfect way! Been going after it since Saturday and noticed each day the birds were breaking up more and more from the wintering groups which were stubborn as hell to call…..We took yesterday off to not burn him out after a weekend of hunting ,and decided today to run and gun it and got lucky enough to hear one gobble very early on the walk in near us. We quickly set up a hen an jake spread and tucked up against a tree. This bird was the first ones this year I have had that was VERY VERY vocal and would gobble at anything an everything (including his dads cough) Finally at 5:55 he sailed into the field we were set up on 100 yds out and with a couple putts and a purr he was on the march into us on a string! Twice he fanned up to strut in but at about 35 yds got very nervous of the jake decoy and I quickly whispered to shoot him…after taking carful aim he folded this bird on the spot at 40 yds! Hell of a shot for a young man and we had a fun celebration after! Congrats Drew on a job well done.

Very cool story. Loved hearing how you gave him a rest too. Turkey hunting is fun. When it gets to be work, especially for a young hunter or someone who’s never killed one, it’s easy to chase them away from the sport. When the plan comes together, it makes the reward that much sweeter. Congrats on introducing another disciple into the high religion of hunting turkeys!
