This early April trip to the Rainy River was one of my favorite trips of the year so far. The numbers of BIG fish present were… incredible. If you’ve never made this trip before I would suggest putting it high on your list of “must do” destinations.

I don’t even know where start with this hunt. Opening morning started like it always does a little breakfast and we where out the door. We made our annual stop for some turkey jerky on the way with high expectations from past years with awesome luck opening day. On our drive I tried to explain to him that with the weather we have had the hunting might not be as good as past years, he replied I’m just exited to have a fun hunt with my dad instantly brought a smile to my face as I patted him on the head and said we will.
We arrived at my farm a choice at about 5:20am and I started to unload all the gear, as always Alex finds some kind of farm animal to play with this time feeding a couple horses. I got all the stuff gathered up and told him lets go we go a little bit of a walk, he came running back over and we started on out way to the blind. We got to the blind after a short hike it wasn’t long after the first gobble sounded up the valley behind us we both looked at each other and smiled. Man after that first gobble that was all it took and birds where going nuts all around us gobble after gobble in every direction.
I set out blind up in a known strut zone where the birds normally frequent in the mornings. We hung tight till about 8 ish with no lack of action, and seeing birds out in the field a couple hundred yards out I thought for sure it would happen but I just couldn’t get one to break away. I decided to pull the plug after seeing the birds head off to the wood line thinking they where moving on for the morning. I climbed out and gave a couple loud yelps and they still kept gobbling away, so I made the choice to move the whole set up about 80 yards closer. I got it all set up and put the decoys out again convinced that they couldn’t see them earlier in the day. I thought if they just see them I can get one to break away and come check things out. Well I worked that same group of birds for about 20 min and the would answer but never showed then just stopped all together. It’s when I cracked the window on my right to make one last call that it all changed and changed fast. I opened the window half way got one yelp out when all of a sudden I hear flapping and sounds like its coming threw the window. I have no idea where they came from but three jakes pretty much flew right over the blind and landed next to the decoys gobbling on after another. I jumped as well as Alex the decoys where maybe 7 yards in front of the blind. I told him to get the gun ready and take aim. The jakes started pecking at the head on my tom decoy, not wanting my decoy shot or him to shoot multiple birds I kept calling him off. One did break away from the rest enough for a shot, I said shoot the one walking and he dumped him right in its tracks no flopping nothing. I was still in shock from where they came from, only think left to do was go check him out.
It wasn’t his best bird by any means, but he was happy he could carry this one out by himself. If anyone out there has thought about taking a kids out do it, keep it fun and simple you’ll love it. I have to say these father and son hunts have been my all time favorite hunts hands down. The smiles and memories they produce and priceless. Thanks again Alex for another awesome memory I wont soon forget I love ya bud your becoming quite the turkey slayer!!!!
In the pics where the turkey sits is where it was shot, by far the closest I have ever seen one shot.
