Calling Update

We’ve been hitting the contest scene pretty hard as of late. Minnesota State contest was the middle of January and the little guy called in three divisions. He called in the Poults and had a pretty good run and ended up getting First Place. In the Jr’s he made a mistake and did the wrong call. He still managed to pull of a third place, but a hard lesson was learned. In the Hunter division he went on a tear and ended up placing First again.

Next up was the Grand National Calling Contest held in Nashville in conjunction with the NWTF National Convention. Four days of turkey calling went on that weekend and a ton of other activities including about 700 booths of Turkey Stuff. We had a great time and watched a lot of our Midwest calling buddies compete. Finally on Sunday morning it was time for the youth to take their turn on turkey callings biggest stage. He had been working on a few changes going into leaving for Nashville but in the end decided to go with proven routines. Cadence was a little off maybe because of nerves, but he still ended up placing in the top 5 in the Poults Division. He’s still got one more year before he moves up to the Juniors, and he’s already determined that he’s calling in it again next year! Is been a great year for him, but whats really fun for me is seeing him develop both his skills and his own sound on the stage.

This weekend we’ll be at the Mid Iowa Classic at the Iowa Deer Classic. Then it’s an opening weekend hunt in the swamps of Florida followed up with the Twin Cities Head to Head at the Northwest Sports Show here in Minneapolis. That will be the last contest for us until after some real turkeys are taking dirt naps after judging us in the field.

Wow! (Is he available for rent? I’ll take him for Mn season “C”…!) Very cool…

I may be able to loan him to you… I’ll warn you, he eats more rations in a day than a whole platoon of Marines.

He set a personal best this past weekend. He called in all 3 youth divisions and the hunter/amateur. He called great and the judges agreed especially in the hunter class against 10 other callers. In the end he had a perfect day, a First place finish in all four divisions.

I also attempted my first calling contest ever in the friction division. I called well enough to tie for fourth, but the nervous shaking of the hand really effects how a friction call sounds. It was a fun experience but I think I may be better off just building the calls and let the boy use them.

Congratulations to you guys Chris! You’re spoiling him rotten with the hunts (Florida?), and mixing in some great competition and life-lessons along the way. Great to see, and like you said, watching him progress through the years has to be a great reward for you guys too.

Linder even made the first photo!

Joel you should know by now I only use him as an excuse so I can go on all these extravagant hunting trips!

The wife and daughter are both hunting with us in Florida and I need one with a bow, so he’ll be watching 3 birds being harvested before he gets to put down the calls and flip a safety off.
