My understanding is in the state of MN you can’t even call without a lic. They consider it assisting in taking the animal I almost got tagged for it deer hunting one year cause my cam man had my rattling horns around his neck.
February 13, 2013 at 3:01 pm #129422I wouldnt worry about it. As long as there isnt any money being exchanged for the services you will be fine. Any extra eyes out on a hunt could be considered aiding the hunter. Lots of guys film with out tags.
February 13, 2013 at 3:43 pm #129424You can also buy tags for later seasons, E-H, over the counter. Or archery hunts over the counter.

Correct , You can be with them and help just can’t have a weapon
February 14, 2013 at 3:54 pm #129434so calling is ok? This is a first timer I persuaded into buying a tag this year. Of coarse I didnt get drawn and the noob did. I would call our local CO but we dont have one in Freeborn County right now.

When I was a junior in high school my good buddy drew a turkey tag and I didn’t. I went with him and helped him call a little (neither of us knew anything about turkey hunting). My buddy shot a turkey and on our way to town we talked to the game warden. We were pretty jazzed up about getting a turkey and told him the story. He listened and asked questions and then wrote me a ticket for guiding without a license in the state of Minnesota. Obviously I was not aware of this rule. He said that in Minnesota you can only watch and not assist in any way without a license. Keep it in mind.

Confusion on this law exists because that was the rule previously. When I learned to hunt birds, there was no aiding in the taking of the animal by an unlicensed hunter in any way. Carrying someone’s decoy bag would be considered “aiding in the hunt.” That rule is no longer on the books, and you can most definitely call or aid in the hunt, but you may not possess a weapon during a season which you do not have a tag for.
Guiding is a different rule however, which is still in effect. There’s no guiding for money allowed in MN. Across the river in Wisconsin or other neighboring states, it’s perfectly acceptable.
