Heading to central Minnesota tonight after work for 3 days of turkey hunting. Given the current stage the turkeys are in, what is my best Option in regards to decoys? Single Hen, Single Jake, A hen and Jake, or no decoys at all ?

Bow-hunting or gun-hunting? Pressured birds or virgin ground? Run and gun, sit and wait, or both? Pretty confident/comfortable with your calling?

All of those factors come into play. Depending on how you answer those questions, I think I might have a different response.

    Gun Hunting
    Limited / Non pressured birds
Mostly sit and wait – some run and gun
So So With a friction call.

With non-pressured birds, gun hunting, and primarily hunting from a blind, I’d try a few hens, or a jake and a few hens. Be prepared to strip them should any birds show adverse reactions to them.

I’ve developed quite a few opinions of decoys over the years, but that’s completely based on the style of hunting I like to do. With a mouth call, I think often the right call paired with the direction of the call, can steer birds into position as well or sometimes better than dekes.

Again, be ready to adapt, but they could definitely help you in the situations you describe. Good luck, and let us know how you do!
