Warm, still mornings on the way….heard a Cardinal booming on the walk into work. That’s always a sure sign that it’s right around the corner.

Off to do some ice fishing, and then a turkey clinic the following day or two. March is confusing!

Either way, the next morning or two would be a great one to sneak off into the woods, even for a half hour or so and get near some birds on the roost. Yes, to hear the gobbles, but moreso to listen to some hens chatter. I like to start my season off with just doing some listening. Hearing how the hens wake up in the tree. How rowdy they get, and how long it takes them to get that way. I’ve even put a watch to it in the past, but every morning is different too. Nothing makes you a better caller than the real thing, and the real thing is about ready to sound off in these next few days and weeks!

ive been heading out in the evenings near my turkey spot to see where the turkeys are feeding, what time they are heading to the fields, and i talk to the hens and gobblers. Ive been noticing the hens are all grouped together most the time with not toms. But the other day there were a few toms off near them. Called to them and got them to gobble back a few times. Even got some video of it!
