Do you know how WI Preference Points work?

I just got off the phone with the WI DNR and found out that non-resident hunters who have a preference point(s) DO NOT take preference or draw a tag over WI residents with NO preference points.

In other words, the chances of a non-resident hunter being able to hunt the first two seasons are very, very slim so don’t ever apply for them if your a non-resident.

Here’s how it breaks down in regard to who get’s drawn for a tag:

Landowner applications take priority over everyone.
    Residents with preference points.
    Residents with no preference points.
    Non-Residents with preference points.
    Non-Residents with no preference points.

What are your feelings about this? I certainly understand that residents should have priority over non-residents with equal preference points but I have a hard time understanding how residents with no preference points take priority over non-residents with preference point(s).

Sounds messed up to me. The WDNR wants your money for a point but it sounds like they really don’t want you to hunt.

Brad, there are plenty of people in WI that think they OWN the game in this state, and they should have preference NO MATTER WHAT. Poor way of thinking in my eyes, but I’m of a hand full of people who understand what non-residents bring to our economy. I also wish WI was a reciprocating state with other when it comes to non-resident costs. Now that my youngest daughter has proven herself for big game hunting, I’m exploring more trips to other states. Its an eye opening ordeal!

Just Curious – Is this any different than how Minnesota handles it?

If you think the WDNR just wants your money, try buying a nonres. deer tag in Iowa!!! Its like $550 !!
It makes me think they should raise they price of pool 4 fishing lic. to about $200…..my2cents….

It is kind of lame but at the same time I can kinda see both sides of it. If I was a resident period and was put on the back burner while out of staters got the choice dates I can assure most guys would be disgruntled.

There’s plenty of over the counter tags for the last three seasons. I prefer those seasons to the first two weeks of henned up, winter flocks that are too tough for me to call to.

I buy 4th, 5th and 6th season tags the day before I’m going to hunt. They can’t hardly give 6th season away.
