Carlee Walker, From Cannon Falls, Daughter of Ray and Debbie Walker, with her 1st turkey
The story as told by Carlee and Her dad
“My daughter’s hunt started on Thursday, April 22nd. We went out that night to get our blind
set up for the following morning. We put it up in the corner of the woods just off a cornfield.
We decided to stay a bit to see if we could see any kind of action. At about 7:45 pm the
turkeys were flying up into the trees to roost. There were at least 6 of them. A big one
landed right above us. It wasn’t a very big one though. Carlee was determined to get a
bigger turkey than her brother. We waited until dark so we could sneak out and they
wouldn’t see us. The next morning we were back in the blind about 5:30. The turkeys
started gobbling about 6 am and they flew down shortly after. All we could see were Hen’s.
We went home for lunch to eat and warm up and then went back out. The same thing
happened that night. The turkeys flew up in the trees all around us. Saturday morning
we slept in because it was raining but went out Saturday night when it cleared up.
We didn’t see or hear anything until about 8 pm when the same thing happened. Several
turkeys flew in the trees around us with the big one right above us. We had tried so hard
to get the big one to fly down to the ground in front of us but he wasn’t having it. On Sunday
morning we saw and heard several hens. That was about all of our action for that day.
We decided to pack up everything because she didn’t want to come out anymore. After
school on Monday Carlee asked if they could go out one more time. So we decided to give
it one last try. We didn’t bring the blind this time we just sat on the hillside right above were
we had seen them roosting. At about 7:30 one shows up. It wasn’t the big one that Carlee was
hoping to get but he was good size. Carlee put the sights on him and in one shot he was down.
He was 18 lbs with a 4 1/2″ beard. It was a very cold and windy season for her but at 9 years
old and her first hunt she did great. She is looking forward to her first deer hunt this winter”
Congrats to Carlee and Her Dad on a great Bird
