I went to my Dads place Tuesday night to prepare for Wednesday hunt. The “cabin” is located dead center of our land and is a great location for scouting and we weren’t disappointed as Toms, Jakes, Hens, and deer were everywhere in the winter wonderland.
Wednesday AM we snuck into our blind this AM with high hopes after watching 5 Toms 8 Jakes and 22 hens go to roost the night before. Only to be greeted by 8 inches of fresh snow which collapsed the roof of the blind. Well once we got that straightened out we settled in and to our surprise never heard a gobble until 8:30. Then holy crap it was gobblefest and we were surrounded. Soon the pack of Jakes walked by followed by 4 hens then 3 gobblers were closing the distance only to get greeted by the Jake pack then the fight was on. One Tom came running right at us like the road runner only to lock up at 80 yards seeing something he didn’t like (maybe Covert needs to make a snow camo blind) Well after a bit the lone Tom worked his way into the swamp and met up with 3 hens. Then the other 2 Toms came off the hill and headed into the swamp also. Finally a hen came out and was walking right at us then a Tom came out but headed off in another direction only to get cut off by the pair of Toms. Then the pair chased the loner right towards us and with a hen right next to the blind he came into range quick I was trying to film and we were running out of windows for filming and shooting so the call was made for the shot not on camera. Dad did his part folding the Tom like an origami swan.
We then waited as it took about 15-20 minutes for the other turkeys to clear out as the Jakes came by again and the Toms went gobbling off into the creek bottom. We took some quick pictures and bailed out as I have a tag for next week and Lori and Joel have tags for the following week. He weighed 18.7 lbs had a 9 inch beard and 3/4 inch spurs. Another great hunt with my Dad is in the books
