Woke up wednesday of first season to 57 degrees and calm winds – perfect. Was set up at 5:30 and the first gobbles started at 5:40. 3 Toms were fired up not more than 200 yards from me. Love that anticipation when you hear them close. At 6am they quit so I figured they dropped down. I had heard quite a few hens talking to them. When the hens didn’t fly or wander out to the field by 6:30 I was getting a little worried. Then, at 6:40 I spotted a hen walk out 150 yards back in the valley. A couple minutes later a Tom struts out following her. They are not moving towards me – just feeding at 150 yards but I decide to wait before calling. All of a sudden 4 jakes come out and start chasing the Tom. He is B-lining it right towards me. At 20 yards he cuts behind me and goes up in the woods. That is when he spots my B-mobile tucked in a corner by the woods. He forgets about the jakes and goes into full strut. He makes a couple circles around my decoy and I let him have it at 20 yards. I guess I have the jakes to thank. Quick season but I’m ok with not being out in the rain and wind right now. Good luck to those braving the wind and rain!
