Not sure if its just me or if it has anything to do with the late spring, harsh winter, etc, but I have been seeing way fewer turkeys this spring than normal. They aren’t strutting in the normal fields around my area like “normal” years.

We took a youth out on Saturday to my number one slam dunk spot. Turkey heaven. Normally, we hear 12-20 different toms. Saturday we saw one jake and some hens and had only three toms gobbling. Not a great showing.

I’d hate to get pessimistic prior to the season really starting, but has anyone noticed fewer birds in your general areas?

Yes, it’s all the talk at work. Guys are seeing very small amounts birds in the fields. I haven’t seen nearly the birds where I traditionally hunt. Even the ones where I work have been awol so far.

Every year I see less turkeys in the fields but they are still around. They are spending more and more time in the woods. We watched a flock for an hour and a half Sunday morning and they only moved about 50 yards total the whole time. So that may play into it also. I agree there isn’t the numbers there was about 5-10 years ago when you would see 200 in a flock but there still are quite a few around if you look hard enough

I have been seeing quite a few birds out actually all over WI. One thing I have noticed is that there are more LARGE groups of birds, not just 4 or 5 here and there. That might be the problem…

    Wake up birds!!!!

I think with all the snow we received this year, the birds went to where the food was easy picking. Like BBD had said, I haven’t just seen 4 or 5 turkeys together, but when I did find them, there are usually a couple dozen or more. With the snow gone now, they should start dispersing and covering more area. Just have to get out and find them, they are there.
