Just got off the DNR website and cannot get an answer so I thought I’d go where I can get what I need. Can anyone tell me if I do not have a turkey license can I take my 10 year old out at any time during the season? I wa pretty sure this is the case but want to be sure, thanks!

They way I understand it is that you can take a youth out without a lic. I’m guessing your child wants to hunt, and you are just tagging along to watch/help out?

This is what I read in the regs. I could be wrong, but it seems fairly clear.

You as the mentor need a hunting license. (Any license will do, not turkey specific)… Your youth needs a turkey license, stamp and turkey kill tag (zone and time period specific, or you can use it this weekend – Sat/Sun – also for the youth hunt. See page 29 of the small game/turkey regs. The law allows for your youth to avoid hunters safety, but that’s about it. He still needs a license, stamp, kill tag and needs to abide by all other laws (Ex, if he has time period D, he can only hunt that 5 day period plus the youth hunt which is this weekend.) You can’t just go out and kill a turkey any old day… Nor without a license/tag in his name.

Your youth needs to do the following, according to page 29: “Hunt within arms reach of a mentor regardless of the age of the hunter or the mentor; possess the appropriate hunting license, permits and tags; complies with all other hunting laws, seasons and bag limits…”

I would say that is pretty clear that your youth needs a turkey license/kill tag and should follow dates and laws accordingly.

    2 cents.

BTW, those were WI regs. I have no idea about other states. If you have the turkey regs, open them up and see what they say!

In the past what people were doing was buying exta tag like 6th season and using that tag for the youth hunt and not burning the tag they applied for foreinstance if they recieved a 1st 2nd or 3rd that way they could shoot hunt the earlier seasons. hope that makes sense?

MN – All youth age 17 and younger by April 13, 2011 can purchase a youth turkey license over the counter to hunt
any single time period A-H beginning March 1, 2011. Youth must select a time period and permit area. Any youth
17 and younger by April 13, 2011 need not apply for the lottery and will be rejected from the lottery.

WI – Youth are allowed to hunt on April 9 and 10 in the Turkey Management Zone for which their permit is valid, regardless of the time period for which their permit is issued, and may harvest only one male or bearded turkey during the two-day hunt. Youths who do not successfully harvest a turkey during the two-day Youth Hunt may use their unfilled permit during the time period and in the zone for which the permit was issued. All other spring turkey hunting regulations apply. More information on the Spring Turkey Youth Hunt and the Mentored Hunting Program is available on the DNR website.
