I start with bright colors in stained water, like fire tiger, white, pinks, chartreuse.
    In different combinations of colors.
    I hope this helps you.

Clear water and Sunny days go with Natural colors on cloudy days or stained water I go with bright colors and there are days when it can by really strange colors that work.Out west here we usually cant see 3 ft deep and use lots of chartruese green orange and pinks to get strikes.

I like Orange and Purple in stained water on bright days. On cloudy days, I tone it up to Chartruese, White and Yellows. Welcome to IDO MoparNick

Browns and reds always seem to work well this time of year. They are usually my first choice for trolling walleyes. If they dont work then the firetiger comes out. Yesterday they where really slamming the reds.

Thanks for the welcome and help!

The stripers and crappies went wild for white and pink yesterday.

This weekend was a tale of two days on the river. On Saturday they wanted the bright colors. Firetiger and chartruese donimated all day. On Sunday the bright colors barely got touched. The craw patterns dominated.

Just keep changing colors till you find the one they want.

About the youth and turkey hunting.

When does the DNR draw the line with to much help. I don’t want his first trip to be one where he gets to watch the game warden give out tickets.

Sitting behind him, and helping him steady in some way shooting sticks…something. I know he can aim and all that, the wife says take him, and just help him.

I guess I would call your local Conservation Officer. I think everyones definition of to much help is different. You might want the one who might be writing the tickets opinion.

I believe common sense comes into play. Keep in mind what the youth hunting experience is designed to do. The focus should be all about the youth’s enjoyment in the hunt so they want to go again and the other focus should be about safety.

That is kind of the way I see it. I’m not wanting to hold the gun, and aim for him and he only pulls the trigger. But the DRN has a different way of looking at things. I had a run in with a warden last year when I had my nephew with “just to watch” he had never been deer hunting ever, warden asked if he was watching or helping point out a deer when ones coming in??? I said he is just tagging along to watch and pretty much threatened to give him a ticket cause he was sure he was helping point them out cause I asked my nephew to carry my rattle horns out so there for he was “hunting without a lic” To me it is all about getting a youth hooked I’m not saying break laws but help do what you can to make it worth wanting them to go for years to come.

Just the little things the DNR twists around are what worries me.

Wow that is a shame! I wouldn’t get too wrapped up in the hunt as far as the kill goes either…just make it as enjoyable as possible. Sounds like your hunter is quite young…blinds work great for young hunters. They tend not to have the patients to sit still very long. Also they can bring games along or snacks to eat! Good luck and I hope the two of you have a great time together this spring!

Yeah was the worst run in I have ever had with a warden to say it nicely. I also got my chewed and threatened to have my brand new mathews taken cause I was walking out of the woods with a headlamp on with my bow in hand “case was in the truck” tried to say I was hunting after hrs with the aid of a light. I guess I just didn’t want to people tripping in the dark I didn’t know I was doing anything wrong.

bring a video camera next time?? nothing better to show your intent than when you have a real time video of it.

sorry about your bad run-in with an overzealous DNR official. perhaps there are some blatant rule breakers by you and hes just profiling everyone the same…

    That’s insane John!

It’s sad to hear when law-abiding citizens who love the thrill of the hunt get badgered while trying to enjoy their passion…we can’t totally blame the DNR for this, but we can totally blame the deliberate law breakers, poachers, etc..
I pray that we all can continue to enjoy the great outdoors as we can today..!
