I love chasing long beards, and for me I hit the spring woods with bow in hand 9 times out of 10.
I love to hunt those days where there is a calm wind, and a slow steady drizzle. I always set up as close to the roost as I can but I think everyone that has hunted turkey knows they don’t always pitch down and head right for you. That’s why I love the calm wind, and drizzle the birds seem to still hang out in the fields even in the rain. I like this weather cause the rain lays the leafs down, and walking is extra stealthy. With there not being any wind it helps keep the leafs from moving making it easier to see, and the birds seem to be calmer, and also helps hear any kind of noise the birds could be making letting you know you’re getting close.
I know a lot of guys that won’t hunt the rain. For me I look at it as an extra edge when the birds don’t come to me. I have bagged more long beards with my bow stalking into range vs a decoy/calling set. It can be hard to do but once you get a pattern that works for you it’s a whole new ball game, and just as fun.
What kind of scenario has worked best for you, or is your favorite “It’s getting closer”
