Well the everstart should be a lead acid battery, Which shouldn’t really matter how you charge it, so if you set the battery charger to AGM or gel battery (probably the same setting) the Lead acid will be fine. The issue is with the Gel cell, even a little with the AGM too, if you charge them too hard and too fast you will develope bubbles in the Gel material, and lose contact with the metal in the battery, and probably won’t get it back, so you end up ruining the battery. The Gel/AGM setting charges a little slower to prevent this, from what I understand.

The lead acid will just bubble up and be fine, so if you have to choose only one setting choose a setting for the Gel or AGM battery, the acid one will be fine.

Seems like there are some benefits to running Gel or AGM, (I’d prefere AGM myself) So the choice is yours when you replace them, Some say the last longer both in use and in years, I choose to replace mine (lead acid) more often and save some up front. From my experince the Lead acid have been great by me.

BTW the Optima’s a gel cells, different than the lead acid everstart…

How do you set your battery charger to Gel or Wet cell. I have a Pro Bank in my new Ranger and did not know there was this kind of setting.

I don’t believe you should be charging an AGM battery using the GEL setting on a charger. AGM and Lead Acid should be charged with the same setting as I understand it, and you should only switch it to GEL if you are using true GEL cell batteries. I could be wrong, but I don’t think I am. On most chargers, once you set it to GEL, you can’t go back. On my Pro Mariner charger, there is a jumper you have to cut to switch it to GEL. Once you do that, it is GEL for the rest of its life.

I have been running optima for my trolling motor for 4 years without an issue. I don’t know how long the life is on them as I haven’t hit the end yet, but I do know I easily get double the run time over the POS Northern deep cycles that I had in the past.

I would double check on the charger settings for AGM or GEL before doing anything.

    From the Pro-Mariner web site:

    Q. What charger setting do I have to use for AGM batteries?

    A. AGM batteries can charge at the lead-acid setting on our battery chargers. Our chargers are factory set for lead-acid so you do not have to make any changes to the charger.

    Q. Can I charge a lead-acid battery and a gel-cell battery together?

    A. Our chargers charge and float lead-acid batteries at a different voltage than gel-cell batteries. You should not mix battery types because you are going to compromise a battery if you charge it at the wrong setting.

I received the charger in the mail today. It is a Pro Mariner Pro Sport 20 Plus. There are 3 “plugs” that you can interchange to change the charge setting.

I called Optima to check what kind of setting. The individual I spoke with told me to charge them as an AGM. As stated above, the AGM batteries can charge on the lead-acid setting per Pro Mariner.

My only questions now are…what is the Everstart Maxx battery? And are my Optima batteries still good or not?

I believe the Everstart is just a standard flooded cell lead acid battery, though I have never owned one so don’t know for sure. I expect your Optimas to still be good, but the only way to know would be to put a battery tester on them. If you don’t have one, swing by someplace like Fleet Farm, or Batteries Plus and they can throw a tester on it quick for you.
