This will be my 2nd year of applying for a turkey license near our farm. What do you think the best season is when the birds will be the most active? I hunt around the Alexandria area. I’m flexible on my dates that I can hunt.

I’m think April 23rd-27th, but it falls on a weekend and I think my guys will apply for that season…?

Great question, hope I’m not too late in replying.

If you look at historical success rates, the earlier seasons are by far the best. They’re also the most difficult to draw a tag for because of hunter demand. “B” season is a favorite of mine as you enjoy some of the hallmarks of early season hunting, with a much better chance of drawing a tag during this weekday-only hunt. That said, great hunting can be enjoyed later as well, primarily seasons E & F. In MN, this falls on a secondary gobbling peak, and usually sees the gobblers responding well a little later in the morning when hens go to lay on eggs.

No matter how you stack it, there’s never a bad time to be in the spring turkey woods, but if you’re flexible and have preference points – I’d suggest applying for an earlier season.

An invaluable resource is past DNR Spring Harvest reports found on the MN DNR Turkey Page.

Deadline is tomorrow hope everyone remembers to apply.

I have always applied as a landowner and drawn a tag every year and have hunted many different time periods. I have always found it easier to hunt the earlier seasons mainly because there is no foilage on the trees. I feel it makes it easier to set up and get clear shooting lanes in areas I could not later in the season. Although later in the season around D-f toms seem to be more vocal and respond to calling better out of the roost.

In the later seasons in the ag areas most feilds have been preped for spring planting and toms love to strut around in the freshly dug dirt making them more visable and if you see them there one day you can count on them being there the next.
