The DNR finally opened up an area to hunt turkeys where we own land this year. Granted, there’s only 5 licenses available, but I’d like to get in on the lottery and start building some preference points. I tried to buy the license on the DNR’s website….but once I got all signed in under the “purchase licenses” section, the Spring Turkey application/lottery wasn’t even an option. Am I doing something wrong, or are they just not available online yet? Has anyone else been able to apply online yet? Any help/insight is appreciated.

    Thanks

I’d hold off a bit or just apply at an ELS agent location. The entire web-part of the program was just rolled-out yesterday, I’m guessing they’re a bit behind!

Wise of you to get the ball rolling however. Too often I’ve been the guy doing this at the last minute, which isn’t good for anyone.

Good luck in drawing a tag in that area, your odds might be better than you think. Typically it takes a bit for folks to realize that their area is now open, and the hunting can be really good. These birds haven’t been hunted yet, so if you do get drawn and get on some good property, the odds are a bit more in your favor.

I’ve actually emailed the DNR the last two years to see if they were going to open it up. Every year when hanging/checking deer stands….the birds are everywhere. And this year while sitting in various rifle stands, I saw probably 20 to 30 birds (some could have been the same birds). I’m excited to hunt on our own land, and after messing around the last couple years I may have a little pattern figured out.
