Just getting around to this one now, but it was a great hunt, thought I would share.
Aaron is a buddy of mine, and together we’ve taken some nice birds together. This one was roosted with a buddy that flew down along a wooded creek bottoms sandwhiched by open fields on each side. The birds headed to the open field, and then spent some time out there gobbling.
After getting them to each answer at some basic yelping, I took a run at them with some more aggressive cutting and yelping. That was all it took to get both of them coming in our direction, at least to a point. Then, some clucking on a mouth call was all it took to get the less interested one of the group concerned that he’d be the last to the party.
An older bird, this turkey came to about 45 yards and looked down the logging road with his head as high as a turkey can hold it in search of that hen. After 3 seconds, he turned to leave. Though Aaron needed no instruction, I said the “sh” in “shoot” but the shot was already off, putting the turkey down hard.
1″ spurs and a 10″ or so beard made this bird a trophy in our books. Weight was around 22lbs if I remember correctly. Please excuse the first picture and how dark it is. It was an overcast morning after some rain, and it was early!
