Public Land Question

I procrastinated and now I’m having problems finding prime private land to fill my archery tag. I scouted a couple of WMA’s last week that looked good. This is only my second year of turkey hunting and I wanted to know if public land is worth trying to hunt? The WMA’s were in the Fergus Falls area. I saw some sign of birds but am just curious as to what experiences other IDO members have had hunting turkeys on public land?

I took my daughters boyfriend out this year on some public land and got him a tom. This was just outside the city limits of Eau Claire where it gets pounded by hunters the first couple seasons. Good luck to you!

Nothing wrong with a public land hunt, in fact they are very gratifying if you able to put together a pattern and get the birds to commit!!! Almost everything in the Northwoods is a public hunt for turkeys. Biggest concern with public land is who is hunting with you and where!!! Scouting for other humans may be as important as any bird scouting that you do and that may not enough as the moop that shows up the next morning who hunted last year thinking he will be where the birds are… Also take care to have some orange on while walking and listen to those hens who might be fake. Otherwise go get ’em!!!
