Got a message from the field. Two hens came by at 7 yards at 6:45AM. The wind is howling already and only one gobble heard. The two hens headed that direction.
Heading down Thursday night to put some birds to bed for Jackie! Looks like rain for Friday which is fine as long as the 30 mile an hour winds don’t blow again! Good luck to everyone!
third permit for fifth and final illinois north season kicks in tomorrow.
you never know what you will find in the last season. i’ve had lonesome toms run me over or had them run the other way at the first call after seeing so much pressure (turkey and mushroom hunters) the past month.
Had a gobbler making all kinds of noise on a ridge this morning. I decided he wasn’t coming down so I went after him. I peeked up onto the ridge top and he was 60 yards away strutting and gobbling. Watched him call to the ladies for a while. Hoped he’d either come my way or go over the ridge so I could pursue. Nope – He shut up and flew straight up 25 ft into a red oak. This was at 8:30am. I waited 15 min and hoped he was taking a snooze so I could sneak closer on the logging road. Don’t waste your time trying to sneak up on a gobbler in a tree during the day. I did and didn’t get more than a few steps at 60 yards before he was wings out soaring away giving me a few explitive putts.
