O.K., to start off I am not a turkey hunter and this is my first time ever going in the spring. After all the fun I had chasing them around last fall for a couple days and also knowing my absolute favorite way to hunt whitetails is to sneak and call to them I thought that I needed to give this spring turkey hunting a try.
I haven’t been doing much scouting but had gotten word that the birds had really scattered in my area. Was not able to go out early this a.m. so I didn’t hit the woods until 11 a.m. After doing some calling and moving about I did not get any response. Off to spot #2.
This new spot is a fairly large woodlot that I deer hunt that I rarely see turkeys in but always see plenty of sign in the fall, scratching etc.. As soon as a pull into the field I see a hen out picking around. Good sign I guess, sneak to the edge of the woodline and make some calls. She stops and looks everytime but there is no sign of a tom with her. After she moves off I continue to call for the next 1/2 hour on and off. A couple times I swear I hear something in mid-call but am not sure. Finally after I call I hear a gobble! Again I am on the move to close the distance. After setting up in a deadfall I start to call again. About every 2nd or 3rd time I get a response and it seems he is getting closer.
Well finally turns out its actually 3 toms and they make it to within about 65 yards but never close the distance. But man what a blast, not quite like having a 140″+ buck coming to the horns but still a lot of fun.
I know where I will be starting tomorrow. Anything you guys can help me with to get them to commit those last 30 yards?
Still not bad for being in the woods from 11-1:30.
