A quick morning hunt

Well I got the phone call from a buddy saying he had a early season turkey tag and that we should try to get it on footage… obviously I obliged . So we spend the night before getting the blinds in working order (4 broken rods in the double bull) and get all the batteries charged and new tapes in the cameras.

First morning comes around and we are running late…. big surprise . aren’t hearing a lot of gobbling but they are right were we thought they would be. So we get setup two double bulls with the b-mobile and hen right in front. We are running a camera from each blind so we are hoping to get some good footage. Well, we get all nestled in and aren’t hearing the birds anymore but its already 10 minutes to 7 so we figured they are down and on the move. Boy were we right. A few clucks and purrs and they start sounding off again. We hear a gobble nice and close and then see a white head come over the little crest of the hill. He is in full strut and is coming to the deke on a string. A few gobbles here and there with a lot of spittin’ and strutting and wouldn’t you know it… he’s at 7 yards in full strut . This has trouble all over it…. We get the footage and I give the que to the bird and BOOM…. dead turkey.. right there with everything on footage from two positions.

But wouldn’t you know… we look up and here comes more. Another big ‘ol tom is out there strutting and chasing around 4 jakes. I’m rolling with the camera and giving them a few purrs and its like a repeat. They come straight in almost at a run and start circling the dekes at 7 yards again but then see the dead bird and start skirting off. They move out to about 60 yards and put on a strut show for the camera for about 20 minutes . Finally we get to take a look at the bird and take way to many pictures .

All-in-all one of my favorite hunts. I’m a senior and a week away fro graduating college and having to watch all my friends go their seperate ways. To be able to spend a morning with close friends and to then get it all on tape makes it even better. The bird ended up tipping the scale at 25lbs with 1.00 spurs and 10.5″ beard. NWTF score: 66

All I can say is thanks guys for an awesome morning in the blind and let’s do it again next year

Wow, awesome pics. Any special camera and/or flash used to get those shots??

They look very well-lit, great definition – especially that first shot.

    Thanks for sharing!

Hey thanks Mike. They did turn out pretty good. My buddy has a high end camera camera that takes really good pictures. Plus we take WAY to many pictures just to get the few perfect shots . It’s fun, I really enjoy being able to capture the moments and have those for years to come.

It’s great when a plan comes together exactly how you wanted it to!

Congrats to your buddy! What are you going to do with the footage? We would love to see it here on IDO!

You sum it up really well here. You get it. I love seeing the enjoyment of the people you’re with being as much a part of it as the enjoyment of the hunt.
