My brother and cousin got drawn for the C season and asked if I would call for them .
We set out opening morning to the same farm and spot that my son Gunner shot his bird
Got in our Covert blind around 5:30 with the rain setting in fast . Unlike my hunt with Gunner we only
had 2 bird sound off at first light but I’m sure it was due to the weather
I let out some soft purrs and clucks then we just waited , I could tell the birds hit the ground as they let off one last gobble . ( 6:45)
Around 7 we hear a gobble to our left and one to our right now it’s time to give them some love talking He hammers back at me
Get ready guys he’s coming …….
OH NO it’s starting to pour this should end our fun So we sit and wait ….
7:10 a Tom walks out about 100 yards away to our right and is coming fast to the decoys , I give him some soft purrs and he goes in half strut then back
down and running in …. ….. He made it to the hen decoy and my cousin let him have it bird down at 7:20 on the first morning and in the pouring rain …. As I run out to grab his bird , the bird to our left gobbles Are you kidding me ???? Pitch the bird in the blind hit my cousin in the legs with it
Tell my brother to get ready the other one is coming …… It took this bird around 20 minutes to come in but he did and he was a big one with 2 beards …… I tell my brother get on him and when I say shoot …. SHOOT …. The Tom walks into 25 yards and I “say” take him …. BANG … ” I yell you missed” BANG … Now I’m … YOU MISSED AGAIN …. BANG …. Bird runs away ……. I give him the look and the how the H did you miss that bird …….
What a great opening morning these two had …. Jason’s bird was 23 pounds , 10 3/4 beard and 1 inch spurs ….. Troy’s, well we will just say 3 empty 3 inch MAGS … LMAO ……. Thanks to my Covert blind we had a nice dry sit …. Thanks for a great blind
Back at it Sunday with some birds talking in the morning off the roost but never did hear another bird till 4 p.m. and he was with a hen going away from us !
After work would be the only chance for Troy to fill his tag . He had some chances all week long but just never got the shot off
I had one bird on my mind and it was one that came in to 5 yards and he couldn’t get the shot of on Monday, ( to thick for a shot ) Told Troy we can
kill this bird so lets try him again today (Wednesday )
Set out after work ,get set up in the woods this time and start calling … Bang ” gobble ” “gobble” bird coming .I look over at Troy and say , DON’t F THIS UP Looks back at me with a grin .. THANKS
This bird came right in looking for the hen and lets just say the only thing he found was a dirt nap !!!!! Bird down ! ….
Troy’s bird was 22 pounds , 10 1/4 beard and 1 inch spurs !!!! What a fun week we had ….. Good luck to all !!
