Finally got a bird down here in the u.p. on tues morning. I found a couple birds the night before and had a general idea where they were roosting. I got up early and set up in the hardwoods i figured they were in. Sure enough as im setting up i hear them gobbling up to the north. Set up the decoys, hide behind a big maple tree and start caressing the box call a little. They got more and more worked up, and flew down around 6:15. They started coming but half way to me the hens started in, and of course you cant compete with that. I had to get to work so when the biggest tom started turning to go to love land with his girl, i raised a little high and pulled the trigger. It rolled him over good and i had to run up a little and finish him off.Almost a little embarrassing how far he was when i paced it off on the way back, 72 yards. Never would have taken the shot if I had known, but i didnt have my bow that morning so i didnt have my rangefinder. But the three and a half number 4’s hevi shot definetly did the trick. Now i have to get my niece abby a bird. We have had bad luck so far. She still enjoys it though! The old man in the pics is my 13 year old montana who still cant believe i went out without him. by the way 20 lbs, 1 inch spurs, 9 inch beard
