Our Spring 2010 Season started on Thursday morning. I chose to stay out of the woods on Wednesday, waiting for my son to get home from college. This is Dave’s senior year in college and his last Spring of being able to hunt when he wants to. Next year, he’ll be a working stiff like the rest of us and will only have weekends to hunt. He arrived home Wednesday evening and we planned our morning hunt.
Thursday we got to our spot at about 5:40 am. We were a bit late, as there were three toms gobbling incessantly about 150 yards across the field. Dave was still putting his head net on and clipping the last few branches in front of him when the trio of toms flew down. They made their way across the field and went away from us, gobbling the whole way. We waited a for about an hour with no action before we moved to Plan B.
We set up on the other side of the farm and began calling in the woods. We had a hen and a tom working our way, albeit slowly. Suddenly, the hen putts and flys off and the tom ran away. Soon after that, two deer ran over the ridge top. I didn’t think deer would spook them. I was right. Two coyotes came loping over the hill. I started clucking a purring, and they locked in to the call. When the got to about 40 yards, I lip squeaked them in to 15 yards where they laid down! We ended up getting one but couldn’t pull a double. One less mangy song dog to deal with!
I had to meet a customer on Thursday evening.I hate it when work messes up my hunting. Dave decided to go hunting without me. I told him where I’d been seeing some birds in the evening and had him set up there. He had only sat for a couple of minutes and had called one time and three toms came in. He thought they all looked the same size, so the closest one got a head full of 6’s and a truck ride back to my house. It was his first solo kill. He was pumped! It was a two year old tom with a 10″ beard, 3/4″ spurs but only weighed 16.5#. He was happy regardless of the weight. I was a little jealous and wished I could have been there with him.
Friday morning turned out just like Thursday. Early gobbling action on the roost and then silence. We waited for about an hour with little to no action when a coyote came trotting down the fence row. It stopped about 20 feet in front Dave and 15 yards to my right. Another dead coyote! Dave told me it was an omen. Friday’s events played out the same way as Thursday’s. He told me our evening hunt would be a success. I was hoping he was right.
With the impending rain for the weekend, we thought we’d try another evening hunt. At 4:45 pm, with the drizzle starting, 4 jakes came to visit. Three got to leave, one took a truck ride to my house. I wasn’t nuts about killing a Jake, but I was less enthused about hunting in the rain.
All in all I thought we had a great two days of hunting. Two coyotes, two turkeys and a ton of memories to last a lifetime! I also picked up a nice shed from a mid 130’s 10 point. At least we have one shooter for this coming Fall.
