from what i know about friction calls, it completely depends on what your hunting situation is. each has their place:

if you need a loud call, go aluminum.

if you need a softer more subtle call, go slate.

and if you want one that will sound the same in rain, go glass.

i personally think slate is more natural and easier to learn on, but glass is considered the all-around top friction call on paper.

I would be scared to use it. Where did you find it?

My Power Crystal is a stanby. Just don’t forget the sandpaper the rougher the better

I have a Neil Cost Gobbler slate call that is hands down the best sounding call I have ever heard. It is worth over $1000 so I am careful using and storing it but it sure brings the Toms a running. I use box calls as a locator and switch to yelps on the slate when I have him coming in. Once he is in sight I only use soft purrs.

From everything I’ve ever read about Neil Cost, I’m sure he’d want you to be using it rather than displaying it. That said, the call may be worth even more than that. As you probably know, his calls are amongst the very most desired of all collectible calls, and anything that guy touched was gold. Some of his box calls have gone for more than $100k.

I’d love to just see the thing, let alone hear you call on it!

There’s some good discussion on an article from last year – How To Use Slate Calls.

In addition to that, I just recommend folks go to an outdoors retailer (with surfacing materials like sandpaper and scotchbrite pad), and call on all of the available calls. So much is personal preference when it comes to materials, and often, I don’t know what sound I like until I hear it.

What I keep coming back to are slates that do one of two things for me:

-bark high and loud with good rasp
-call soft and low with good ability to purr/cluck

I’ve been hard pressed to get both out of any one call. Once you really tune into what you want, check out a custom call maker to match a variety of woods with calling surfaces. Chris Walls (on this site) of Walls Calls is a custom call maker that makes a top-notch call for a very reasonable price. He can help you select what would suit your tastes as well.

    Good luck in your search!!!

    Joel
