I got drawn for the Escanaba area. I’m really looking forward to it as a snow storm cancelled my hunt last year! Anybody else hunting in MI?

    Hello Nate!

Was considering hunting the left-thumb portion of the “hand” this year. Have some family with a bit of land there, but I’m going to try to head west instead I think.

You need to fill us in on this UP hunt. Gursky I’m sure has done it too, he should chime in here.

Hey Joel, I will definitely keep you posted on how it goes. My wife and I go to Mexico the week before opener (me for bonefish and tarpon, Beth for sun and relaxation) so I’ll miss opening day, but I’ll be hunting hard for the 3 days I’m up there. Looking forward to sharing the experiences.

    Hi Shiner!

The locals really don’t apply much anymore since they started selling them over the counter a couple years ago. Turkeys need to be fed through the winter up here due to the cold/snow. The best bet is to watch the weather, and if you can find an area to hunt near a winter feeder location you should be able to locate and roost gobblers to hunt during the early part of the season.

I’ll will post some reports before the opener as I have several contacts that hunt turkeys, especially with bows. I am in Dickinson County but hunt over near Hardwood.

South of Escanaba would be your best bet…lots of farm country with forested perimeters.

Where are you from in the UP?

    Tom,
I grew up in Bessemer and have hunted in the Escanaba area 3 spring seasons. My dad and I hunt on a farm a few miles outside of town and have had some success. No issues finding the birds….it was the drive that I couldn’t make last year

We hunted with one of my dads best friends, who lived in Escanaba, until he passed away 3 years ago, so it means a lot to my dad to hunt there. Obviously there are many opportunities much closer to Bloomington, but it’s a special place to him and me.

As it approaches, I’ll post some reports as well as my dad works for the Forest Service and gets reports from some guys over there as well.
