I was fortunate to get drawn for the 1st season in my area. So I took the kids for a truck ride last night out to ask the landowner on my #1 spot if I could have permission to hunt.
I pulled into his driveway as he was walking up to his porch. He stopped to see if I was going to turn around or stop in. I drove about half way up his driveway when his 2 dogs came busting out around the corner of the house. These were typical farm dogs, barking and chasing my truck up the drive. Joe(the landowner), made his way back down the steps waiting for me to come to a complete stop.
After parking the truck, my kids quickly unhooked their seat belts and made a dash for the door. I immediately told them to stay inside. I didn’t need them running around and distracting me from my intentions.
I hopped out and made it about halfway up the sidewalk when that little black & white hellhound bit me in the back of my leg… I never addressed the dog or the situation as I didn’t want to rile the owner of one of the best farms I have avail. to hunt. Any other dog, and I believe we’d have a different reaction….
Joe saw what happened and laid into that dog with a verbal barrage of obscenities that I was fortunate my kids soft ears missed… He kindly told me if that happens again to not hesitate punting that dog into the next valley. I politely declined, again not wanting to go down that road.
After a quick conversation and permission to hunt I was back in my truck, rubbing my sore leg and muttering words better left unspoken with my current company.
As a warning, if you’re approached by a farm dog on foreign property keep your head on a swivel….
Bring on the MN Turkey season. I can’t wait.
BTW, Joe told me he has over 15 birds feeding in his field everyday. X2!!
