Go with a combo unit, you won’t be disappointed. Lowrance 522c is a good start. Not only good sonar, but color and the advantage of GPS.

Lowrance X15-X17 are good all around units with capability for lakemaster or other upgrage chips for your GPS.
The sonar is pretty impressive and will give you more options then you’ll probably need.
I don’t know if you can find a new one, being they’re black and white, but e-bay will treat you right, I’d guess around $300.

I have a 16′ lund rebel with a 25hp yamaha,I am looking to upgrade my locator,I’m not looking for all the bells & whistles, just a quality locator. My main areas are the St.croix, bwca, and a few wisconsin lakes(walleyes),any recomendations would be appreciated.

The best mid-range sonar-only (no GPS) option right now is the Lowrance LMS-520C without GPS and add the transducer (HST-WSBL for the transom or the PDT-WBL for the bow). For around $450, it’s your best bet. You can track an 1/8th once jig in 40 feet of water with that unit. Another benefit of going this route is that you can always add a GPS module later if you want to make it a GPS/sonar combo unit.

Ask around and you’ll find a lot of very happy LMS-520C owners.

Shoot me an email if I can help you.

Do you have a gps on board already?

If not I would look at one of the combo units. I currently run lowrance units, but a lot of people are switching to hummingbird.

Wade has great insight on these units at JollyAnn take a look. He’ll answer all your questions, ship for free and no tax!
