they are a southern species.. and this is the northern most piece of their range… with an old fashion kick rump winter they are “feeling the pain”… you will also notice a lot of garden people crying this spring.. we were rezoned to a more southern zone… and plants that are not resistant to cold have been planted in many gardens… this year they wont be making it…. its the winters that limit the spread of southern species… like shad

Shad are very delicate. Its normal to have a die off following every winter. It doesnt take much. Even a rapid temp change can cause a die off in the warm months.
March 13, 2008 at 3:16 pm #664984let them keep dieing itshould help out the trolling bite out in Pepin this year I would think

Shad die every year. This should be nothing new.
Ogres love dead shad. They butter their toast with ground shad. They make a great Hollandaise sauce too.

I know there has been much less snow to the North but in the La Crosse area the plants have had 2 feet of insulating snow to protect the plants from winterkill so the gardeners around here shouldn’t be too worried.

She popped open today along 46 through town. I imagine she is good to go now!
Shad spawn and die every spring.
March 14, 2008 at 2:52 pm #665391They die off all winter long down here too. Below one of the dams here in town you can watch the eagles fly down and feed on the dieing shad that come over the dam. Early in the spring just after the ice melts on the lakes you’ll see coves where the winds blown thousands into these coves. I read where northerns are some of the earliest to feed on some of these shad.
March 14, 2008 at 9:08 pm #665541I am just amazed at what a wonderful base to the food chain these guys are. They are the prey of so many fish and are so delicate that they die easily and yet, they reproduce in such great quantities that there is always a supply. The only bad I see is that there numbers fluctuate greatly from year to year because of it.
Three cheers for the shad!lickPosts: 6443January 25, 2010 at 10:39 pm #211029This link will show the “extra” tags that are available over the counter
