LAST CHANCE SALOON

last night was the last chance i was going to get to hunt(season ends today and i could not hunt today) so on my way home from work i pull in to the farm i’ve been hunting. and drove back to my usual parking spot, got out and started putting on my hunting clothes. as i’m doing this i’m thinking perfect conditions, 94 and sunny with a 35 mph wind . after i get geared up i’m thinking i should take ride down the draw to the river(st.croix) and scope it out. well i get down there and it’s not as windy or hot so i take a little walk around but saw no turkey sign so back up the hill i go park the truck and figure i’ll hunt in the woods out of the wind. i start walking around in the woods making my way towards the park(washington county park) and come across a nice opening close to the park so i put out the decoys and hunker in in a nice dead fall. after getting settled in i get the call out and call 3 or 4 times REALLY LOUD and then sit and watch. not 5 minutes later i see something moving in the woods on the other side of the decoys and sure enough it’s a turkey. i can not tell what it is. (the woods are getting pretty thick) after it passes out of sight i call 2 times softly and stop. i’m thinking to my self “i better keep an eye open because i know how turkeys like to circle around” not 5 minutes later i see 2 turkeys to my right coming my way. now these turkeys come in to the opening between me and the decoys. i see the first one has a beard, not a big beard but a beard none the less. so i think for a moment and come to the conclusion that this is my last hunt. “a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush” the actual hunt lasted about 15 minutes. not a big bird (just shy of 15 lbs) but not bad for the 11th hour. in closing it was actually quite nice in the woods, shady and no wind so to speak of.
