Seems like about this time of year, the traffic on the sites slows down and people start thinking about fishing more…….morels are in the woods, as are the wild onions…..graduation planning and summer about to kick-off…..WELL SNAP OUT OF IT!
Later season is typically when I have more success in calling birds to my location, and we’ve got a few good weeks left in both MN and WI. I’ve got a few gobblers around that have just been incessant on the roost, hitting the ground and gobbling even more! Even the hens that aren’t incubating are leaving their toms mid-morning to sit on nest, and I’m seeing roaming toms more and more. It’s usually this time of year or a bit earlier when I start seeing toms crossing roads in random places, trying to find receptive hens wherever they can.
I was out picking morels a few days ago when I had a bird gobble at me over 100 times while I was walking in the woods and making noise. Had a buddy who was turkey hunting for the first time, have one land @ 40 yards and strut into 20 right off of the roost!
Hopefully we’ll see a strong close to the season here, as there have been a LOT of birds hitting the ground in earlier seasons from the IDO members!
