Well, just like deer hunting I will be eating my turkey tag. My short day and a half trip turned even shorter when we had to leave earlier than planned. Wednesday morning at sunrise we had 8 different birds gobbling, but could not get them to commit. At about 7 the gobbling stopped and didn’t get a response for the rest of the day. At about 8:30 I formulated a new plan and took a long hike around a big swamp and found a small clearing in some think stuff. There was a small 3 by 5 watering hole in the clearing that had seen some good use. After about 45 minutes I had one come in on my right side silently at about 12 yards. It was in some thicker stuff but I had a head shot and could see the body a little. It looked like a low 20 pound bird. But being in the thick and on my right side I could not get a shot. I could see it looked at my decoy and then circled behind me. Then as silent as it came in it left my life. That was the last bird I saw and had to be out of the woods by 12. I will have to eat my tag this year as I won’t get out again before my season ends and now have fishing on the brain. I haven’t found any good recipes in the forum for eating tags, but have eaten enough recently I might add one. I like turkey hunting, but the pond is calling me and my boat so it is ok.

DT, don’t feel bad I ate my first tag this year also.

Try try try again. It sounds like you still had some good times and enjoyed your time. That is what makes it sweeter when it all does come together.

Happens to everyone. Like Brad said, good work on not taking a poor shot. Eating a tag because you couldn’t recover wounded game is much worse.

Sounds like you hunted hard and did your best in the given conditions. That’s all you can hope for!
