this is my story of youth hunt

well guys. i have a story for you. on Saturday i got up at 5 in the morning to be ready to go out at 5.30. we got out to the blind and with in about 5 mins we had toms gobbling all a round us. had one come strutting in to about 30 yards. and then he got behind a tree so i lost sight of him. then my uncle said can you see him. just as he said this another tom came walking out. so i though he was talking about that one. i said. ya. can you shoot. he asks. ya, i say. then shoot. he said. BANG. ( this bird was about 60 yards away) that one was a big miss. so we where going to go where they eat and then all of a sudden. i see 2 decoys and a tent set up. a guy had his kid hunting. o man. now we cant get them feeding. so we go by hearing them gobble. we had one about 40 yards away but he never showed up. then we where walking out when my uncle herd a hen. so we talked to her a good 3 mins. when my uncle said. Ok Chris, theres a hen about 60 yards that way, there got to be a tom around, up three pine rows my uncle herd him puff up. he hits the ground. i cant didn’t know why at the time. them i say his fan. i hit the ground. he came out about 45 yards a way and BANG, i miss again. no i am just getting really made about missing. then my uncle had to go to work. so he called his buddy to come out and call for me. we went over to a friends land and saw some turkeys out in the field. we got up and around them and did about 3 calls. the tom never gobbled. i heard him coming but it was to late. i saw his head come up. so i pulled my gun up. he looked a round a almost flow a way when my caller called again. he walked up about 2 yards more and then. once more BANG, i hit him but not a vitals shot. he walks a little farther and BANG, miss him. he runs over the hill and was out of my life. all these breeds had over 10 inch beards. i laugh just thinking about how i miss and i think its kinda funny i missed 3 birds in ONE day (that takes a lot of skill ) how much worse of a shot could i be. i thought. but then i thought. i average 2 does with 2 shots so i could have been worse. we went and shot the gun i used and i only had about 2 bbs in the vitals. then my shot my friends gun and had about 50 bbs in the vitals. but i never saw another tom to shoot at.

i will have to get them 4th season.

Stick with it, just shows you how important the prehunt items are, like patterning you gun.
It’s all part of the learning curve. Good Luck.

    Chris:

Like heat suggested, you’re not “missing” those birds, you’re simply not throwing a pattern that’s capable of cleanly killing one.

The bad part is that you wounded a bird or two. It’s something that happens to everyone a time or three in their turkey hunting careers. The good part is that you’ve hopefully turned those situations and the way they played out into learning opportunities!

As a general rule, stay away from any shot beyond 40 yards unless you’ve patterned your gun and know it throws a killing pattern there and/or beyond. 60 is unheard of in turkey circles, and even 45 is a poke.

Pattern that gun before 4th season, and spend some time shooting cheaper loads like target load out of it to become more proficient.

Please don’t mistake my words as preachy or condescending! I want to see you succeed, and look forward to hearing about your 4th season.

    Joel
