What is your opinion on inflatable turkey decoys?

Has anyone tried the molded head inflatable turkey decoys made by Cherokee Sports ?

The molded heads look very realistic and it would be great to simply carry them in your hunting pocket. I don’t now about you but I’m sick and tired carrying so much gear! What is your opinion? Think they would work?

They look good and will move well in the breeze, but I would be a little concerned with the glare from the plastic. Could you rub a little dirt on it to dull the sheen? Otherwise, they do look really good.

I went with a collapsable Cabela’s brand and really like those for the money. They fold up well, don’t take up a ton of room in the vest and are pretty realistic. So far we’ve shot 2 birds over them.

That is a very good question Brad…I’ve thought about that myself! I guess I would be a little concerned about a big tom coming in and popping one of those decoys! As far as the glare goes, I guess I wouldn’t be too concerned…the feathers on the real ones have a glare to them as well.

But I’m with you Brad…I’m tired of carrying the gear as well. My son will have to start carrying a little more this year! It’s bad enough with all the turkey gear…but then throw in the video equipment and it becomes really crazy!

The portability of it would be great…my luck I would hike back to where I would set up, pull out the decoy and have a hole or tear in it. I use the collapsable type and seem to work pretty good. Ive never checked out the blow up type and would think they would work great if they were heavy duty enough..Give them a whack Brad and check the durability Jay

i think inflatables look much more realistic – silhouette and colors – than foam decoys, although the foldups have improved a lot in recent years.
i carry a hen and jake sceery inflatables cause they pack so easily.
however, i dont use decoys very often, which is a subject for another thread.

Exactly, try 2 peoples gear deer hunting, extra stand for camera, camera stuff and decoy.

This year Brad will have to start caryying his own stuff. He is a BIG boy now.

I’m with Walli in that the decoy discussion is another one altogether.

As for these inflatables, they’re some of the most realistic I’ve seen. Shiner has a point with the “shine,” as real turkeys have a shine as well, but obviously the depth of shine on each individual feather is different than a bright/shiny overall object like these decoys. They have no “depth” like some of the harder plastic ones have. That type of plastic also has a tendency to fade pretty heavily in the sun, which depending on how much you hunt may/may-not be a problem. Depending on durability and fade, it might be something you get two years or so out of?

As for portability, they’re definitely a space-saver in terms of carrying things. For the bowhunter, I think that’s somewhat crucial as already stated. However, for the gun-hunter, especially the type that likes to strike a bird, then scramble to setup and get a decoy out, this isn’t your type of decoy. I have no experience with these, but unless you’re doing a lone-hen/jake, the Sceery decoys take enough time to inflate that you’d be hard-pressed to do it in short-order.

All depends on how you hunt. Love the heads however!

i can blow up a sceery in 2-3 good huffs, but thats still valuable time if you strike a bird and he decides to charge right in. theres times to use them and times not to.

I have the sceery flock. The only problem I have with them is when it’s cold they deflate and tip over.

Pretty funny comment Lip – considering you’ve never shot a turkey before and you expect me to your guide…

Brad. Just to let you know that the Turkeys are running wild in Buffalo. Butch and I were up early Sunday morning and put down some great footage of Nine Toms running about 30 hens. Butch has been out every morning and said he recorded footage yesterday that we can’t talk about on this family site. The time is coming. I called Pat yesterday and ask it he could help the two dumb guys (only when it comes to camera work) convert our footage to you-tube. I guess we are going to try and work on that at the Deer-Turkey Expo in Madison this weekend. I know I’m looking forward to the season. I have 2nd season in unit 4 and I just bought 5th season in Buffalo.

Actually, I have killed a few and by the time you guide me I will have at least one more on the ground this year, maybe two. However, I do need your help with calling.

Dan – it sounds like Butch and you are having some fun! Rob and I (along with the girls) will be hunting the 5th and 6th seasons in Pepin Co.

P.S. If you guys need some help posting your videos up on you tube, I may be able to help you out with that on Friday.

Hey Dan…I bet I know EXACTLY where those birds are! Tell Butch if he needs a guide I’m pretty reasonable!

I’ve been using a scercy inflatable for a couple of years now. I love them. Light, easy, portable.
I just bought a new flock.
