Getting permission for this spring?

This past weekend I made a few stops to ask about turkey hunting this spring. The places I stoped were all people who had in the past let me hunt and they all said ok for this spring also. A couple of the others wern’t home but it is always nice to have a few spots early. I hope to get a few more and be around that 1000 acre mark because a buddy has a tag also and I’d like to get him his first bird.

Has anyone else been out yet? And what has been the results?

I mostly hunt some private family land but it is good to get out early and know you have some spots. I have gotten my in-laws to adopt a calendar to write down who will be hunting which weeks so they don’t overbook the farm – so far only a few double bookings that I have heard of.

I have been scouting with my 12 year-old teaching him what to look for – shot a few tree rats along the way too

Been doing a fair amount of permission asking. Like you mentioned, it definitely gets easier when you maintain a relationship with the landowner and he sees you year after year.

The same is true however when a particular property falls out of favor. Going back after 4-5 years is tougher than you’d think. Some guys even get worked up and take the “my land isn’t good enough for you?” approach.

If you haven’t been out already, now is high time to do it. I know I’m usually out there even before I know I’ve gotten a permit. That way, I’m the first person to hit up that landowner, and I usually have to come back to show my face just before the season anyway.

Carrying a pre-made calendar with your hunting dates or possible hunting dates on it makes it easier for the landowner too.
