Thunderstorm bird

Well as you can tell from the pictures, my brother Dan didn’t have the weather I did when I harvested my bird! His bird was shot Thursday morning last week…and all I can say is thank god he had his Command Post blind on this day! We arrived at the blind and were greeted to lightening bolts off in the distance! Not the way you want to start a hunt. The goal was to harvest a bird with his bow…but technical difficulties with his arrow rest forced us to go with the 12 gauge!

I would say at about 5:30 we were greeted to the first wave of heavy rain and thunder which lasted I would say 1/2 hour! Once the rain stopped I happened to look out the back window to see turkey’s coming over the top of the picked corn field! A bunch of hens and jakes were feeding there way to our location. Then 5 minutes later I could make out the fan of a gobbler coming from the same direction. They slowly made there way to us but changed directions when they got about 130 yards out. The hot hen was pulling them away from our set up. This is where we enter rain storm number two! Heavy rain fell for another 1/2 an hour and then it was just a steady rain. Again I looked out of the back of the blind….here they come again! Almost an exact repeat of the first time. This time they hung up at about 150 yards and just stood there. They weren’t feeding or doing anything….just standing around waiting for the rain to quit I suppose. Well since we had B-Mobile out with a hen I told my brother to give a couple yelps out to the fellas to see what they would do. As he does that the two toms start to feed in our direction…very slowly, but at least they are coming in the right direction. Now as if it were scripted or something, I turn to him and say, “Isn’t this the part were the tom’s are suppose to come running into B-Mobile?” I know more than got it out and they closed the 100 yard distance in a hurry!

Now my brother normally shoots left handed, but from the direction the birds were coming he thought he would have to shoot from the right. Well by the time the birds came in they got to the decoy and he was in the process of changing shoulders when….BUSTED!!! He got caught switching the gun…his FIRST shot was at about 12 yards….his SECOND shot was from about 30 yards….and his final shot was from about 60 yards! He finally dumped him on the last shot…thank god for extended range!!!

Anyway, he got himself a 23# bird, 9 1/2″ beard and 1 1/4″ spurs! This will be a hunt we both will remember for a long time only because of the conditions! With the right equipment you CAN hunt in the rain and wind…the turkeys will be out there too! (Nice tail feathers don’t you think?)

Thanks Dan for letting me tag along and film your hunt!

Video of this hunt will come soon as well!

Copper…Mossberg 12 gauge pump! He said those extended range shells better work for $40.00 a box! Apparently they don’t work so well at 15 yards!

Brad…I’m heading to the editing room tomorrow night! You won’t want to miss this hunt! There is a little comic relief and a mystery prize for my brother in the end!
