Last week was my turkey season here in Wisconsin and to say we (my hunting buddy – Adam) were excited was an understatement! We were hunting new land this year and we knew we were in a good spot. So…4:30 a.m. the alarm sounds…and to my suprise Adam (age 10) was ready to go with only 3 wake up calls needed! So as we are heading to the land he says to me, “Dad, we are in a pattern.” I said what pattern is that? He says, “Well my first year turkey hunting we got one, my second year we didn’t and last year we did…” So I mention to him that I guess we need to break that pattern quickly then! He says that sounds like a good idea.
We get to the land and quickly head out! It’s a pefect morning with no wind and clear skys! We get settled in the blind and the sound of gobbling begins….all around us! It was awesome to sit there and listen to all that gobbling and to anticipate when, where they will appear!
As day break comes and we are able to start seeing better in the fields, I hear the familar BLOWING of a whitetail deer! Even though turkeys don’t mind a blind set up in the middle of a field, apparently deer don’t like it so much! But with the deer snorting the way it was, it was also doubling as a nice locator call!
The time must have been close to 6:00 a.m. and my soft calling kept a couple of gobblers going to our right. Our set up was on top of a field on a bluff with woods that dropped sharply on both sides! We were overlooking a valley and even though we could see the wood line which was only 35 yards from the blind, we couldn’t actually see the ground because of the hump in the field. So we worked these birds for about 15 minutes when they went silent. I assumed they had headed down the valley to where my brother was set up so we took a break in calling. At about 6:25 I’m shocked back to reality when to my left and right on the wood line I hear the double gobble of the birds! I look at my camera man who is ! I wake him in time to stand up and start filming. I give a little call and up pops a red head! Then I see the second bird as well…and they slowly make there way to the decoys (two hens and a jake…my favorite set up). I grab my bow and realize that I’m going to get an opportunity to try out the new Turkey Terror broadhead I had purchased over a month ago! As the two birds approached, the man gobbler fanned out so that made it easy for me to pick which bird to harvest! They come into the set up slowly, one strutting and the other right next to him. As they stop 10 yards out and next to the jake I ask Adam if he was on them and he says “yes”! Now I just need the one to take a couple of steps so the strutter is in the clear…and he does! I let the carbon express fly…and the was put down! In the end he was a 25lb, 11″ beard and 1″ spurs!
We did video tape the event like I said and will post it when I have it edited and downloaded! I’ll also post my brothers hunt as I taped his as well.
We also got some walleye fishing in but didn’t do so well. The biggest is pictured here…27″ and almost 6lbs!
I have my wifes season coming up in a few weeks and I bought an extra tag for the last season so hopefully there will be more to come from the Pearson camp! Good luck to everyone who is yet hunt!
