Is to far for a shot at a turkey with a shotgun? My friend here at work says he shoots 90 yards with this new blackstorm ammo. I say thats to far I would never shoot over 60.

I know nothing of that Blackstorm ammo, but 90 yards seems really, REALLY far.

Hopefully someone can educate me on that ammo.

Could he be referring to Black Cloud? If so I think its a new waterfowl load that is really catching on this year. I’ve heard it is devastating stuff. But don’t know much about it.
Not sure why someone would want to shoot a turkey at 90 yards anyway? Would take the fun out of it IMO.

Welcome to the site Vinny! If it is indeed blackcloud ammo – it’s steel shot made by Federal and yes it is very good for waterfowl. I used it this year in Saskatchewan and was impressed. However, I’m not sure why you would want to use it for turkeys when you could use hevi-shot or lead. And 90 yards??? I would ask him to pattern his gun at that distance and prove it! It’s mighty difficult to down a turkey even at 50 yards much less 90 yards!

Same reason people shoot deer with a rifle at 100 plus yrds…it takes the fun out of it…I personally agree with you blue, but I would guess “because he can”

My general rule is NO farther than 40 yards. $0 can even be touchy sometimes in my book. No need or fun in shooting one farther than that. Might as well take a rifle with you than, it would probally do less damage also.

I agree with Eric, not over 40yrds. You may hit him but good luck killing him. 90 yrds, never ever heard of it before.

Yup…maybe a very lucky BB or two hits the turkey in the brain but at 90 yds the pattern would have huge holes in it as the pattern spread out… I am doubting the knock down power of the shot at that range also…unless it is 00 buckshot!

40 yds is the max for me….and I’d say your friend is full of it….absolutely pure luck….not much kinetic energy left at 90 yds. Those turkeys are tough birds.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I told him he is a idiot and would only cripple those poor turkeys at that yardage. You guys are swell.

I’m with you Protour! Unless it’s a first timer turkey hunting, I would prefer to chase them with a bow as well!

In my shotgun, fitted with a .665 choke tube and 2 oz. of #6 shot, I get a tremendous pattern out to 45 yards. I killed my bird last year at 40 yards. That was the outside of my comfort zone. I prefer 25 to 30 yards.

Anyone who says they can kill anything with birdshot at 90 yards is either a poor estimate of range, or a storyteller.

Test your individual gun and see what it likes to shoot and how it patterns. Different guns will shoot different loads. My gun likes Winchester 2oz #6. 1.75 oz don’t pattern nearly as well. But, thats my gun. Yours could be different. Buy a few different boxes of shells and go spend some time on the range. You’ll get to know what your gun likes and dislikes. Make sure you shoot at close range, too. A really tight choke tube is like a rifle a 20 yards. My gun sgoots a golf ball sized pattern under 15 yards. Its easy to miss at that range, if you don’t take the time to really aim.
