I didn’t notice this change until today. I’m glad the DNR finally made this change.

If an applicant is picked for either the first or second choice and does not purchase the license, a new preference point is not awarded. .
Do not apply for a second choice if you do not wish to purchase the license, once picked the license cannot be issued again.

With that change, I’m assuming that when you lookup your lottery results this year, it won’t tell you how many points you have.

Now I have myself confused about this. Can anyone clarify this. I was under the impression that when you applied for a spring permit you gained a preference point. If you were successful in the drawing they took the point away and if unsuccessful you kept the point until you applied the following year, in which you’d gain another point. So why would you gain a point if you were successful in the drawing and then didn’t buy the license?

I think that the preference point system is like you say, that when you apply for the permit, you are given a preference point, where you are confused is that if you are drawn for a license, your preference points go back to Zero. The big thing that people do not realize is that you do not have to choose a second season, for if you do, and are drawn in it an cannot hunt for some reason, it is treated the same as if you purchased the license or not. The lottery system does not account for purchased licenses, only drawn winners. Not sure if that makes sense or not.

i agree w/ what they are doing. i’ve heard of organizations that are against hunting that have members apply every year and have 8-10 preference points and get chosen every year and never buy a license, in hopes that they are saving an animals life. when in reality they are only allowing for more hunting opportunities by helping the population go up. thus, forcing the DNR no other option other then to be more liberal on permits. It’s about time that the DNR did something that made sense.
