I’ve always just pretty much used a slate call. Ca’t get a mouth call to work for me (tried 1000 times), and had a push button call I hated. Thinking of buying a box to try. Any advantage to it over a slate?

A box call is nice in windy conditions…birds can hear it better than a slate or mouth call and it reaches out at longer distances. It’s also a nice change from using a slate….gives the birds a different sound and may give them the impression of more than one hen in the area. Have you tried the New Primos Sonic Dome mouth call? I used that this year and worked good for me! Don’t give up on the mouth calls…they are nice to use when the birds are just out of shooting range but are close enough to where you don’t want to be moving and using a slate or box!

I have to say, i am a Primos call user and put 100% of my trust in them. But, i did buy the Sonic Dome last summer for this spring turkey hunt and i can’t stand it! Too high pitched. But that is just my opinion and maybe i don’t have a roof in my mouth for that call . But i would invest in a box call definitely!! Work great in windy conditions!!

Nope, stuck at work today and tomorrow (though might get off early tomorrow). 3 day season for me.
Nice that we can now hunt until sunset though!

May 5, 2007 at 12:15 am #31437I use HS Strut or Quaker boy diaphrams mouth calls and after you learn to use them thier great. One thing i do is shape them to the roof of my mouth by pressing up on the diaphram with my tounge so it fits the shape of the roof of my mouth better, you may have to shape them with your fingers too but make sure the rubber stays tight and dosen’t loose its taughtness after shapeing. After you practice with them they sound like the real thing, had a guy walk right up on me once hunting sheds thinking i was a turkey. Boxcalls are very nice and sound like the real thing too but often tie your hands up when the turkeys are close. Try to use the mouth calls if you can, thier a great way to set deer at ease when thier spooked while hunting in the fall, i take one every time i go bow hunting and have save me from being sighted more than once.
